Povilas Višinskis

Povilas Višinskis

Born on June 28, 1875, in Ušnėnai, Šiauliai County (Kelmė District).
Died on April 23, 1906, in Berlin.
Buried at Rasos Cemetery in Vilnius.

A public, cultural, and political figure, publicist, literary critic, and participant in the Lithuanian National Revival movement. From 1894 to 1898, he studied at Saint Petersburg University, where he researched Samogitian anthropology and ethnography and engaged in photography. In 1897, he was one of the organizers of the first student conference in Šiauliai. Between 1898 and 1904, he lived in Šiauliai and its surroundings. He worked as a private tutor, took part in public and cultural life, and was active in distributing banned Lithuanian press. In 1899, he participated in staging Keturakis’ comedy “America in the Bathhouse”. In 1901, he settled in Kurtuvėnai, where he organized literature distribution across Šiauliai County. After the death of Vincas Kudirka, he became the editor of the Lithuanian newspaper Varpas.

In 1903, the case brought against Povilas Višinskis in 1900 for posting Lithuanian playbills for the performance “The Devil in the Trap” was dismissed. The Senate ruled that there was no legal basis to prosecute him. It is believed that this case contributed to the lifting of the ban on Lithuanian press in Latin script. In 1904, Višinskis led a May Day celebration in Kairiai Manor, which covertly hosted the Lithuanian Democratic Party congress, where the situation of the Varpas press was discussed.

He wrote short stories and sketches with realist-democratic tendencies, as well as an ethnographic study titled “Anthropological Characteristics of the Samogitians.” He prepared two primers. In his publicist booklets and articles, he expressed democratic political views. He encouraged Lithuanian writers Šatrijos Ragana, Žemaitė, Lazdynų Pelėda, and Jovaras to write and took care of publishing their works.
